If you had to choose only one parameter by which to compare camping mattresses, it would be the R-value.

However, this indicator also causes the most misunderstandings.

Many believe:

  • the higher the R-value, the better the mattress;
  • R-value means how cold a temperature you can sleep in;
  • a thicker mattress means a higher R-value.

None of these statements are entirely correct.


What exactly is R-value?

R-value describes the mattress's ability to prevent heat flow from the body to the ground.

More simply put:

the higher the R-value, the less heat you lose.

This does not mean the mattress generates heat.

It means it better retains the heat generated by your own body.


Imagine a thermos

A good camping mattress works similarly to a thermos.

A thermos:

  • does not heat the coffee;
  • it only prevents it from cooling down quickly.

The mattress works in exactly the same way.

It does not make the ground warmer.

It simply reduces heat loss.


Why was comparing R-values difficult before?

A few years ago, each manufacturer used its own testing methodology.

As a result:

one manufacturer might indicate an R-value of 5, while another indicated 3.8 for a very similar mattress.

During the day, it can be +18°C.

But the ground, after several cold days, can still be only +3°C.

This is the ground you are in contact with all night.

Is an R-value of 6 necessary in Latvia?

Mostly – no.

For most hikes in Latvia, an R-value of:

3–4.5 is sufficient.

When is an R-value above 5 necessary?

Such a mattress becomes relevant if:

Contrary to popular belief, you won't feel hot, because the R-value does not mean the mattress "generates heat".

Mountains

What might be perfectly suitable for family camping at Lake Usma will not be the best choice for a 100-kilometer hike in the Scottish Highlands.

How to choose a mattress according to the activity?

So far, we have looked at how a camping mattress works and what R-value means. However, in practice, people rarely buy a mattress solely based on these parameters.

Much more important is the question:

Where and how will you most often use the mattress?

A mattress that is ideal for family camping may be too heavy for a 100 km hike. Conversely, an ultralight model perfectly suited for Alpine trekking might not be the most comfortable choice for relaxing by a lake.

Let's look at the most popular scenarios.


1. Family Camping

If you don't have to walk several kilometers to the tent and equipment is brought by car, comfort is key.

In such a situation, it doesn't matter whether the mattress weighs 600 grams or 1.5 kilograms.

Much more important are:

  • sufficient thickness;
  • good sleeping quality;
  • ease of use;
  • durability.

Here, an excellent choice would be:

  • a thick self-inflating mattress;
  • or a comfortable inflatable mattress with greater thickness.

  • appropriate thermal insulation.

If you mostly go on summer hikes in Latvia, you don't need an expedition winter mattress with a very high R-value. On the other hand, if you plan to stay overnight in the mountains or during winter, the mattress's thermal insulation can determine whether the night will be comfortable or sleepless.

Before purchasing, ask yourself five questions:

  • Where will I most often be sleeping?
  • What season will I be using the mattress in?
  • Is low weight or maximum comfort more important?
  • Will I be carrying my gear in a backpack or a car?
  • Am I prone to feeling cold at night?

The answers to these questions are often more important than brand or price.
